Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen OUT NOW

Legendary rock journalist Steve Rosen has finally released his long-awaited book about the intimate friendship he shared with the late iconic guitar player Edward Van Halen. The book is titled Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen and chronicles the writer’s remarkable relationship beginning in 1977 (before the release of Van Halen’s first album) and continuing through 2003.

Rosen, who has previously authored seven other books including biographies on Jeff Beck, Free & Bad Company, Black Sabbath and Randy Rhoads, writes about what it was like being friends with the greatest guitar player in the world.

Not an easy task to undertake.

In order to tell the story accurately, Rosen pored over hours of interviews—all fastidiously recorded and catalogued on cassette—and peered deep inside distant memories to create a book unlike any other out there.

The journalist spent many hours with Edward at his own Hollywood Hills guesthouse; up at Van Halen’s 5150 studio; on airplanes, in cars; and even jamming on several occasions with Ed.

There is no other book out there that captures the heart and creativity of the late master instrumentalist. Rosen was Edward’s friend—close friend—for many years and no other writer can lay claim to that title.

Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen is a hardcover, 580-page tome with a 7×10 format. Front and back covers were shot by the iconic Van Halen photographer Neil Zlozower who also provided interior photographs.

The author was going to write Edward’s authorized biography back in 1985 but that book never came to light. Van Halen fans have literally been waiting some 37+ years for Rosen to revisit the book.

If early responses from readers are any indication, fans say the wait was well worth it.

Steve Rosen writes, “I chose that title, Tonechaser, because Edward once described himself in that way. I thought it was such a beautiful, fragile, and poignant word for him to use in his pursuit of the ever-elusive Brown Sound. I also thought it worked on another level in terms of the ‘tone’ of his life and being a guitar player, bandmember, husband, father, and icon.

“I had never heard Edward ever use that phrase anywhere else and in fact after interviewing hundreds and hundreds of guitar players, I’ve never heard one of them ever use that word to describe what they do.”

Never before seen photo by Neil Zlozower, Van Halen’s official photographer from 1978 until 1984, graces the cover of Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen.

Here is an excerpt from Chapter 4 titled “How to Play Guitar Like Eddie Van Halen in One (Not So) Easy Lesson.” Steve Rosen shares “This took place on December 30th, 1978 and was the very first time Edward came over to my little guesthouse in the Hollywood Hills.”
My coffee cup emptied and my brain swimming with a sweet caffeine buzz, I heard a car pull up on the street below. I looked out my front window and saw some beater parked in front of my garage and assumed that couldn’t have been his car since I expected him to pull up in something fast, shiny, and exotic. I went into a mild pique of anxiety because I wanted to keep that spot free for his arrival. I opened my front door, started down the stairs and saw the driver’s side door opening. I was about to unleash fury in the same instant I recognized the person exiting the car. It was Edward. He slammed the door, saw me standing at the top of the steps and called out, “Steeeeve.” Holy sweet sabotaging hell, I almost screamed at him for parking in the place I was holding for him and how unsettling would that have been?
I walked down the steps and said hello, thanked him about a hundred times for coming over and how had he been and how was the tour and honestly, I don’t remember much about what took place. I was too busy grappling with the incomprehensible reality of his presence at my place that day and trying to make some sense of the fact that I was standing there with that person whom I’d only met a little over a year-and-a-half ago and during that time had conquered the world and been elevated to a level of idolatry few musicians ever reached over the course of an entire career much less achieved with the release of one album and holy fuck what was going on? All of that went trampling through my head and as I tried to process it Ed said, “Get in the car.”
While I sat there in his car waiting to hear the music, I wanted one of my neighbors to see me. No, I was desperately hoping a neighbor would see me and particularly this drop-dead blonde who lived one house up from me or these two fiercely beautiful girls who lived across the street. I was praying one of them would be walking by and see me sitting in the car and look at the driver and recognize him and gasp. I would no longer be that anonymous writer who lived at 1909 Weepah Way but rather that guy who was sitting in a car with Eddie Van Halen. “Maybe we should go talk to him,” they’d think. “Maybe he’ll introduce us to Eddie” (cue: squeals of sexual delight). Scenes of wild excess dancing in my brain, I was brought back to reality as I heard Ed cuing up the tape. Before the first song came out of the boombox speakers, I realized how truly rare this was. Not only because I was sitting there with Edward Van Halen, but because I had never listened to an album while the artist was right there beside me. I had been to listening parties where the record label played a band’s new album as hundreds of guests and the group itself wandered around noshing on hors d’oeuvres and tossing back free cocktails at an open bar but that was not the same because it felt so impersonal. This was different, man. I was there with the artist about to listen to his album. One on one. That had never happened before.
The first song started pouring out of the speakers at ear crushing levels. I was assaulted by that monstrous riff bordering on what I thought was almost funky; a very staccato, stabbing-like lick. The next track began with a series of behemoth chords and segued into volume swells I figured Edward had created with the guitar’s volume control.   What I remember about both songs were that as soon as the killer solos kicked in, there were no rhythm guitar backing tracks, which was what I loved about Cream and their live approach to recording. I also recognized that as something Van Halen had done on the first album: just a stripped-down trio going for the throat.
We sat there in his car and kept listening and I tried to scribble mental notes in my brain about solos and certain riffs and what kind of guitar sounds he was getting but that was nearly impossible. Had I known we were going to be listening to music, I would have brought a pen and paper and I was not about to say to him, “Uh, Edward, I’m going to run back into the house and get a pen and paper. Just pause it there.” Talk about a mood killer, right? I had no reference point because there were no vocals, so I had to try and catalog the songs as a fast shuffle or mid-tempo and which solos went in which songs and stuff like that and the minute a new song came on, I forgot the track before it.
Because we didn’t want to disturb the neighbors, the windows had been rolled up. Edward continued to blow smoke rings like whole notes that drifted to the top of the car and filled the compartment with this vaporous and lethal cloud. My eyes were watering, and I could feel my lungs turning black. On top of all of that, he had cranked the volume to such a deafening level, I kept waiting for little droplets of blood to come leaking out of my ears. Still, with all of that, I never wanted to leave the car. I wanted that tape to keep on playing so I could sit next to him forever, locked in that cocoon, that bubble, marveling at the guitar playing I was hearing and thinking I was the most special and privileged dude in the world and who cared if I went deaf, my eyeballs exploded, my lungs turned to leather, and a merciless migraine sent me to the hospital. I was sitting in a car with Edward Van Halen and hearing music only a few people in the world had heard at that time and if that meant going deaf, dumb, and blind, I was willing to make the sacrifice.

About the Author, Steve Rosen:

Steve Rosen is a professional music journalist with a career spanning over 45 years. During this period, he has published well over 1,000 articles appearing in major periodicals originating from around the globe. Everywhere from the United States and Canada to Japan, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, England, Australia, Brazil and even Katmandu. Amongst the publications Rosen’s work has appeared in are Guitar Player, Guitar World, Guitarist, Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Times, Playboy, Musician, US, Creem, Circus, Player, Total Guitar, Classic Rock, Mojo, Roadie Crew, This Is Rock, M Music Magazine, Rhythm and Drum! and a myriad of others. He was also the main contributor to the influential music site, Ultimate-Guitar, for many years.

He was the West Coast correspondent for Guitar World magazine for four years during the seminal mid-‘80s when he wrote seven cover stories [three lead features on Edward Van Halen are now recognized as pivotal pieces on that artist]. As a contributor to Guitar Player magazine, he wrote a prodigious 16 covers in a six-year span [one out of every four was his]. The 1977 Frank Zappa front-cover contribution represented the periodical’s biggest selling issue to that date. Additionally, GP, in two special reprint issues, featured his stories on Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page as covers [Rock Guitarists published by Guitar Player Productions and Rock Guitarists Vol. II distributed by Guitar Player Books).

He served as West Coast Editor for Fachblatt, one of Germany’s most respected and highest circulated magazines [during his tenure, more than half of the cover features were Rosen-based compositions]. He was the West Coast correspondent for Player, a Japanese periodical employing his services for over 40 years.

A recognized authority on the eclectic world of rock, Rosen has been tapped seven times to write books on some high-profile individuals including one book on the history of rock for children. His first book was The Beck Book on guitarist Jeff Beck that required a second printing due to the crazed demand [published in Japan in 1978]. The Artist Formerly Known as Prince was part of the Rock Lives series orchestrated by Castle Communications and distributed by The Penguin Group [1995]. Bruce Springsteen, an eponymous-titled bio published by Castle Communications was also part of the Rock Lives series [1995]. The Story of Black Sabbath: Wheels of Confusion was a book on the classic metal band that went into a third printing 1996. Free At Last: The Story of Free and Bad Company was published in 2001. In 2008, he wrote The Story of Rock Music, a book on the history of rock music for children. In 2012, Rosen wrote a book called Randy Rhoads issued by Velocity Publishing and his most recent Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen.

He worked briefly in 2008 as a correspondent for the Gibson Guitars website. Look at his True Adventures in Rock Journalism series to see a unique blending of print and audio.

Never a creator to involve himself in armchair observations, this traveling troubadour’s work has taken him to distant vistas in search of mysterious stories and elusive sagas.  Steve has been hand-selected to accompany numerous bands as traveling wordsmith. Pen and persona have been present on the road with Led Zeppelin, The Who, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Loggins & Messina, Van Halen, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz, Alice Cooper, The Firm, and others.

Because of his insights as to the inner workings of rock ensembles and able to extract their thoughts and mindsets, he has been cited by other writers as an indispensable source. He is cited in a cross section of texts and a great number of his quotes appear in countless numbers of reference and biographical works including The Encyclopedia of Pop, Rock and Soul ]; Hammer of the Gods; Robert Fripp; Uncle Joe’s Record Guide; Secrets From the Masters; The Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal; Jeff Beck: Crazy Fingers; several Frank Zappa profiles including Frank Zappa’s Negative Dialectic of Poodle Play; and Frank Zappa Companion. And many others.

In addition to his essential journalistic pursuits, Rosen has worked closely with record and management companies, providing them with bios and treatments. This involved working with Atlantic Records, Warner Bros., Columbia Records, and music-related businesses such as Seymour Duncan, Oberheim, Charvel Guitars, Kawai, Guitar Center, C.P.P. Belwin and REH Publications. For this latter company, he virtually single- handedly originated and developed a line of instructional tapes called ProTalk (that included Carlos Santana, C.C. De’Ville, and Lee Ritenour and several others). Similarly, in 1991, he sketched out the blueprint for another line of guitar videos titled Hot Guitarist for the ESP Company.

In recent years, his work has been utilized as liner copy for both audio CDs and DVDs. For the English company Chrome Dreams, he wrote all the liner copy for oral liner copy diaries on Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, and Kiss as well as licensed his own extensive audio library of recorded interviews to be shaped and edited for the CD material itself. Passport Video embraced this remarkable archive in order to extract valuable audio for their DVDs on Van Halen [The Van Halen Story: The Early Years], Queen, and Led Zeppelin. In 2005, he licensed a large number of interviews to another highly regarded audio content company and additionally, provided cover text and extensive liner copy for projects including The Beach Boys and Jethro Tull.

Steve Rosen’s understanding of rock’s winding road derives not from reading maps but from writing them. This native of St. Louis, Missouri, draws from a number of sources including his work as a published songwriter. His have been covered by outside artists including Blackthorne [for whom he co- wrote three songs with esteemed vocalist Graham Bonnet for their self-titled debut album including the title track “Afterlife”). Additional published works include Sic Vikki’s “Tough Enough” for their first album; and a co-write on Cold Sweat’s debut [produced by master knob-twirler Kevin Beamish of REO Hi Infidelity fame]. Rosen has drafted songs for several cable movies [Scorned featuring Playboy figure Shannon Tweed, Kiss’ Gene Simmons longtime friend, pops up on late night television like clockwork [ and his music is regularly heard on major daytime soap operas like All My Children and One Life to Live.

In the late ‘90s, he co-wrote Spirit Nation, a world music project marrying Native American elements with ambient textures—loops, slashing edits, twisted, tangled and tender flute arrangements—and landed a deal on Richard Branson’s V2 Records. The record has sold over 50,000 units to date. A second Spirit Nation album titled Winter Moons was released in 2001. In 2022, Rosen co-wrote and played rhythm guitars on an album called The Waiting Fire with a band called the called Highway Sentinels, which featured vocalist David Reece (ex-Accept), keyboardist Jimmy Waldo (Alcatrazz) and drummer Mark Zonder (Fates Warning). Rosen called on some of his buddies to play solos including Joe Satriani, Bumblefoot, Paul Gilbert, Matt Heafy, Tracii Guns and Joe Stump.

Apple Computers has specifically chosen two Spirit Nation tracks to drive major media campaigns and a film company tagged one of the songs as part of its soundtrack.

Recently, his main focus has been on organizing his incredibly extensive and rare collection of audio interviews dating back to 1973. The entire library represents well over 1,500 hours of content with hundreds and hundreds of classic rock’s most engaging, enraging, and entrancing characters.

Here in 2022, Steve Rosen continues to track down rock’s elusive denizens. When not on some semantic safari, he retreats to his Laurel Canyon cottage, nestled in the bucolic hills of Hollywood. The space is crammed floor to rafter with books and records, broken guitar strings and miscellaneous incomplete book chapters and song lyrics.

As someone earning his keep as a conversationalist and instigator of ideas, Rosen is typically the quietest person in the room. But place him within shouting distance of a guitarist, and in 10 minutes he’ll have them revealing parts of themselves even they didn’t know existed.

And this, perhaps, is his greatest strength: drawing on a chameleon-like ability in transforming himself from interviewer to innerviewer to simple friend. A musical zelig. Steve is someone with whom you want to tell your secrets to and for many decades now, a lot of people have been doing just that.

TRIBUNAL Releases “Without Answer” Video/Single

Debut LP “The Weight Of Remembrance” Nears January Release Through 20 Buck Spin

s 20 Buck Spin prepares to release the melancholic and entrancing The Weight Of Remembrance debut LP from Vancouver-based TRIBUNAL in January, an official video for the record’s second single, “Without Answer” has been issued.

Featuring classically trained cellist/bassist/vocalist Soren Mourne and guitarist/vocalist Etienne Flinn, TRIBUNAL’s brick-heavy classic doom riffage borders on death metal heaviness, like My Dying Bride filtered through a colossal stained-glass edifice. The sound is instantly familiar with nods to the ‘80s and ‘90s but never sounds retro or like mere homage. Rather, The Weight Of Remembrance evokes the feeling of a painstakingly composed orchestral movement fit for a crumbling cathedral overgrown with moss. The duo frequently trades off vocals alternating between haunted wailing cleans, scathing black-metal style shrieks and dread-filled death calls.

The Weight Of Remembrance features additional contributions from several other talented musicians, including drums by Julia Geaman, additional drums on “Apathy’s Keep” by Magdalena Wienski, piano on “Remembrance” by Claine Lamb, and additional vocals by Rory Say. The album was recorded by TRIBUNAL except for the primary drums which were recorded by Andrew Conroy at Fifth Chord Studios and Wienski’s drums which were recorded by Violetta Macri at CJSF, after which the songs were mixed and mastered by Markov Soroka. The beautifully painted cover artwork was created by Soren Mourne, with lettering and frame by Karmazid, photography by Liam Kanigan, and layout by Dan Fried completing the presentation.

The video for “Without Answer” was filmed and directed by Erik Gustafson with production manager Gabrielle Gustafson for Erik Gustafson Cinematography. The band offers, “‘Without Answer’ is a lament for a loss of community and loss of faith, and the empty space that remains after. Musically, it is one of the most representative tracks off The Weight Of Remembrance, featuring melodies and harmonies shared between cello and guitar mixed with aggressive riffs and an even blend of clean and harsh vocals. ‘Without Answer’ was one of the first songs we wrote for TRIBUNAL, beginning in mid-2018. It has evolved significantly over the years and found its identity in the darker, more despairing version that appears on the record.”

TRIBUNAL has also confirmed a set of tour dates throughout British Columbia in February. Watch for additional previews of the LP to post shortly, and for the band to announce additional live performances throughout 2023.

TRIBUNAL Live:

2/17/2023 The Waldorf – Vancouver, BC

2/18/2023 Wicket Hall – Victoria, BC

2/19/2023 Jackknife Brewing – Kelowna, BC

TRIBUNAL may yet be unknown to the wider world, but their spellbinding The Weight Of Remembrance is poised to immediately change that. Steeped in the black velvet finery of gothic doom metal, the band weaves dark tales of ultimate judgement, never-ending rain, and forsaken despair.

TRIBUNAL’s debut is an essential addition to the modern doom canon, one which can expand in infinite musical directions from a base of crushing tragic heaviness and forlorn purpose. In that sense The Weight Of Remembrance has the accomplished atmosphere of a band beyond their years in the scope and execution of its vision.

SCARS OF ATROPHY Kick The Mosh Pit Wide Open w/ New Music Video “Nations Divide”

Tucson, AZ thrashers Scars of Atrophy, formerly known in the 80s as Atrophy on Roadrunner Records, rebranded their lineup in 2020 and recently unleashed their return to the mosh pit with the new EP “Nations Divide” in June 2022, 30-plus years after the release of their last full-length 1990’s “Violent By Nature”. The band approached this comeback EP as both the entertainers and the audience. They love the thrash metal genre and for them, there is nothing better than watching a huge mosh pit break out while playing on stage. The EP has also garnered praise with comments such as “honestly this EP is easily the winner for the best thrash metal material in 2022” – Encomium Zine and “Breakneck speed and crushing mid-tempo are balanced, so that fans of EXODUS, VIO-LENCE and TESTAMENT definitely get their money’s worth.” – Twilight Mag.

Closing the chapter for their breakthrough return that saw them touring the country and sharing the stage with bands such as Exhorder, W.O.R. plus a performance on Dimestock (Watertown, WI), Scars of Atrophy is sharing with fans their latest music video for the “Nations Divide” title track, which features clips from this year’s shows and insane mosh pits.

Scars of Atrophy are currently working on their follow-up record for 2023, the band comments:

“Our yet-to-be-titled forthcoming album still needs tweaking and a hint of flavoring here and there and will be a greater representation of our EP ‘Nations Divide”. All songs on the EP will be on the album as well. Musically, the songs are all hard-hitting with our signature tempo and riffage. Definitely an aggressive approach with the thunderous double bass of veteran thrash drummer, Tim Kelly. The album will also have new tracks, Purge, Burn the Veil, and A Trophy Kill, which are currently being played live.”

Rockshots Records Signs EMBRYO For New Album “A Vivid Shade on Misery” ft. Drummer George Kollias (Nile)

Rockshots Records is proud to announce their signing of the Italian melodic death Embryo for the release of their fifth album “A Vivid Shade on Misery” on March 17th, 2023. For the album’s recording, the band recruited international drumming powerhouse George Kollias (Nile).

The fifth full-length follows the band’s 2017’s “A Step Beyond Divinity” (Art Gates Records), 2015’s Self-Titled (logic(il)logic Records) that featured Fleshgod Apocalypse’s drummer Francesco Paoli, 2010’s “No God Slave” and their 2006 debut “Chaotic Age”.

Since the band’s inception, Embryo has toured across Europe with Melechesh, Keep of Kalessin, Tribulation, Nile, Immolation, Ragnarok, Monuments of Misanthropy, and Suffocation along with performing on festivals such as Masters of Rock (CZ), and Total Metal Festival (Italy).

Embryo began writing their 5th offering in 2020 with George Kollias and entered the Domination Studio in July 2021 with producer Simone Mularoni, and engineer Simone Bertozzi.

Monolithic, intense, powerful, technical, and melodic this new album features eight brand new tracks and is another concept album like its predecessor “A Step Beyond Divinity”. The band is inspired by historical Italian figures of the Renaissance era and their tormented lives, their absolute genius, and the gifts they gave to the world. While the previous album “A Step Beyond Divinity” was inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci, this new work is totally inspired by Michelangelo Merisi alias Caravaggio, an Italian painter active in Rome for most of his artistic life.

“With “A Vivid Shade on Misery” we want to have listeners dive into our world by giving them brutal and atmospheric music melted together in the way we love to do plus having Kollias drum on this new album, one of the best drummers in the world, is just an absolute honour. Overall, fans will find this album has the “Embryo” matrix, there’s no doubt about that. It will be a more direct record and its songs make up a pattern that takes the listener on a journey through torments and anxieties, but which at the same time gives him pure energy.” adds the band.

From the band’s first album “Chaotic Age” (2006) to today, Embryo‘s music has evolved over the years. On the first record, they were more brutal and messier, now their compositions are much more “thought out” and brilliant. If they had to use one word to describe their compositional evolution they would say “sharp”.

Track Listing:
1. Pride – 3:58
2. Highest Fame – 4:19
3. Darkest Lights – 4:01
4. The Seed of Lividity – 4:02
5. MMDC – 5:04
6. Medusa – 4:18
7. Vanitas – 3:59
8. Concrete Visionary – 3:29

Rockshots Records Signs France’s Manigance For English Version of New Album “The Shadows Ball (Les Bal Des Ombres)” Out Feb 2023

Rockshots Records is proud to announce their signing of Manigance for the English release of their latest album “The Shadows Ball (Les Bal Des Ombres)” due out on February 24th, 2023. The original francophone version was released on March 18, 2022.

What started out as a cover band to doing full fledge originals and being garnered “Best French Group of 2003” by Hard Rock Magazine and triumphing on the stage at Hellfest, “The Shadows Ball” is the band’s eighth studio album and first to be sung in English by new vocalist Carine Pinto who replaced Didier Delsaux in 2018. The band made the decision to to do English songs as they wanted to make their music more accessible to foreign audiences in preparation for their 2023 European tour with Rhapsody of Fire in March.

“This album contains different songs from the Manigance standards. We have shortened the songs and worked on the arrangements. We think we can play a lot of these songs in our shows. It’s a sign that the fans should enjoy these songs. They are adapted to be played live. We have evolved in our writing process. The songs are still very rich, but the structure is simpler. We also listen to the latest productions to offer a modern album with a current sound.” adds guitarist François Merle.

Sharing powerful music with melodies that hook with you and that are instantly memorable, fans of the band will hear lots of surprises in each song that will make you want to listen to them again and again to catch all the details. From the big riffs that make you want to move your head, to modern guitar solos, and big bass drums that roar like a V6 twin-turbo.

“I decided to do some new guitar parts that were heavier than on the previous albums. I bought new amps to be able to produce a new guitar sound for the new album. I wrote the majority of the new songs. With Carine’s new voice I proposed new structures. I preferred to shorten the instrumental parts of the solo to focus on the composition. Lionel worked a lot on guitar arrangements to bring a new and more modern atmosphere. We took advantage of the break with the covid to find new inspirations. The time allowed us to work on the melodies. We also decided to replace some keyboard parts with guitar parts to have a heavier sound than on the previous albums. As soon as the demos of the songs were finished, we started the recording process.” says band composer and guitarist François Merle.

With Carine Pinto’s voice, Manigance was able to work on new atmospheres. She has a very warm voice in the low register and can also reach high notes. This allows the band to cover a lot of melodies and to try out new structures for the new full-length. The band chose the songs that they thought were the most successful and had different moods. For example “End Of Lock Up”, which is a duet between Carine and Zaher Zorgati of Myrath (whom the band toured with across Europe in 2018), is a song with a strong focus on the chorus. They created this song mainly as a crowd-chanter during their live performances.

“As soon as the melody was built, the sound of the guitars came to reinforce the atmosphere of the song. We did a lot of guitar recordings with different amps. This created a very rich guitar sound to accompany Carine’s voice.” adds Merle.

The new album features twelve tracks that are inspired by Pinto’s lyrics from personal and intimate emotions, but also can relate to most listeners, from the betrayal of a friend, the burning of Notre Dame Cathedral (Paris – France), climate change, violence against the LBGT community, confinement during COVID, and domestic violence.

Track Listing:
1. Odyssey – 1:23
2. Cold Blood – 4:24
3. All Your Excesses – 4:28
4. End of Lock Up – 4:26
5. The Shadows Ball – 5:14
6. Death Warrant – 4:01
7. High Treason – 4:48
8. Eternity – 4:36
9. At Gates of Memory – 4:42
10. In Spite of Everything – 4:42
11. Dawn of The New Fight – 4:49
12. Forgotten Survivor – 4:34
Album Length: 52:12

Illegal Mind announces new single “Turning Back” on December 30th

Illegal Mind is a post apocalyptic alternative metal band from Tel Aviv, Israel, found in 2018. The band released their debut EP “Forbidden Content” in 2020, and are currently finishing their new EP. The First single “Turning Back” will be dropped on December 30th 2022.

“We think “Turning Back” is heavier than the previous releases, musically inspired by Refused, Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park(?). The song was inspired by Maxx’ ex-girlfriend, when he noticed that she basically turns back to previous thoughts and actions, which she used to. We always return to our previous selves, no matter how many times we try to change, even if it’s not that good for us. But usually we don’t need to, for nobody, especially if it makes us feel awful. We are turning back to what we used to, is also the decision on recording the album like we used to, DIY, from the comfort of our own studio!” – says the band.

“Turning Back” will be released on December 30th 2022, on all the streaming services and also available for download on BandCamp.

LOVEBITES Return with JUDGEMENT DAY: New Music Video Out Today

New Album Out Feb 2023

LOVEBITES, one of Japan’s most important names in heavy metal, return from their hiatus with a new member, a new music video and news of a fourth studio album coming in February 2023. The album is also available to preorder today from JPU Records, and is available physically in three editions.

JUDGEMENT DAY, the fittingly titled album will be the first to feature the band’s new line-up, which includes bassist Fami, who was selected after an audition process and is just 20 years of age. The fast, melodic and heavy metal sound that LOVEBITES has excelled at since their debut is still burning strong, but has been sublimated further. Newcomer Fami also brings an added charm to the quintet, including her signature slap technique. The album contains ten completely new songs, mixed and mastered by Finnish masterminds Mikko Karmila and Mika Jussila, who have worked on all of the band’s studio albums.

Fans can get a taste of the new LOVEBITES today with the release of the digital single and music video to the album’s title track, available to download, stream and watch now:

The cover art for the album features a wolf, an incarnation of the band that has appeared on all of LOVEBITES’ previous albums. This time, as the title suggests (JUDGEMENT DAY), the wolf clutches scales that weigh good and evil within its jaws, and is captured sprinting between the sun and the moon. Further meaning from the cover art can be discovered in the title track’s music video, and further details will likely be revealed in the future too.

The album will be released digitally worldwide on 22 February 2023, and released on CD from JPU Records from 24 February 2023. A video on Demand and CD bundle is also available directly from JPU Records’ website. It features a documentary of the bassist auditions which includes interviews with the members of the band, as well as Fami while she was still one of the finalists – all with English subtitles. It also includes four studio sessions; ‘The Hammer of Wrath’, ‘Golden Destination’ and ‘Shadowmaker’ from the audition finals, and ‘Bravehearted’, the first session with Fami as an official member of LOVEBITES. There is also a third edition that includes the CD, the video on demand content and a JUDGEMENT DAY T-shirt. Additionally, 50 orders of this latter bundle will randomly receive a sleeve case that has been signed by the members of the band.

In May 2017 LOVEBITES made their debut and released THE LOVEBITES EP through London’s JPU Records, followed by full length album AWAKENING FROM ABYSS in October 2017 and had a series of shows in Japan and the UK. In 2018 LOVEBITES made their first festival appearance at Vans Warped Tour Japan 2018 Presented by XFLAG, as well as a headline show in June for mini album BATTLE AGAINST DAMNATION. In July they participated in HEADSTRONG FES.18 organised by ANTHEM, followed by performing at the world’s biggest metal festival Wacken Open Air in Germany and Bloodstock Open Air in the UK. They also toured Europe with X-ray Touring. When the band returned to Japan they toured Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka before appearing at SUMMER SONIC 2019. They then joined DragonForce for their UK tour in November as special guests. In January 2020, the band released third album ELECTRIC PENTAGRAM. It became the band’s first album to enter Japan’s Oricon Top 10 rankings, peaking at number nine. Solitude In Madness was released on May 1st, 2020. Vader went outside of their comfort zone, headling to Grindstone Studios in Suffolk, UK where the band teamed up with one-stop-shop Scott Atkins to engineer, produce, mix, and master for four weeks in the summer of 2019. The album artwork was created by death metal cover legend Wes Benscoter (Autopsy, Cattle Decapitation).

2020 also marked the 25th anniversary of Vader‘s classic and much sought-after 2nd album De Profundis(first released in 1995 in Poland), which hadn’t been properly available in physical form in about two decades. Many fans regard it as one of the best albums in the band’s catalog.

Formed in 1983 in North Eastern Poland, Vader areone of the longest-running bands in the history of extreme metal. Since their 1992 debut album The Ultimate Incantation, they’ve become a major force in the death metal scene – touring relentlessly, with over 2000 shows around the world and playing almost every metal festival from Wacken to Hellfest and beyond. Their latest album Solitude In Madness(2020) climbed up to #2 on the National Polish album charts. Still, their first breakthrough success already happened with their second album De Profundis, which was first released in Poland in 1995, and in 1996 in Europe and the US.

ENSLAVED Release “Caravans To The Outer Worlds” Live Video/Single

Left-field metal luminaries Enslaved have revealed a single and video for ‘Caravans to the Outer Worlds (Live from The Otherworldly Big Band Experience)‘. The track, which comes from their forthcoming new studio album Heimdal (out March 3rd), as well as last year’s EP of the same name, sees an innovative, alternative live recording and stellar presentation of the song, with nuanced accompaniment from fellow psychedelic Norwegian prog band Shaman Elephant.

This extraordinary performance took place one year ago, on last year’s Winter Solstice, via the streaming event The Otherworldly Big Band Experience.

Heimdal album bonus versions will contain an extra track, ‘Gangandi‘, alongside a Blu-Ray copy of The Otherworldly Big Band Experience. This streamed event was the band’s boldest project to date. The kaleidoscopic stage show features a spectacular setlist, covering Enslaved‘s career, both past and present, and several tracks never previously performed live.

Grutle Kjellson commented,
“Caravans To The Outer Worlds’ was the first material written for our upcoming album, and that first song usually points in a certain direction. However, this song points in several directions, and that really made the whole process immensely interesting, and ultimately pushed us making our best album ever!
This live-version, taken from ‘The Otherworldly Big Band Experience’, our last big project keeping us alive during the pandemic, is the first of hopefully many opportunities to behold a performance of this energetic song. We hope you’ll enjoy it. God Jól!”

Enslaved‘s 16th studio album, Heimdal, will be released on March 3rd 2023, via Nuclear Blast Records.

You can pre-order Heimdal here: https://enslaved.bfan.link/heimdal.ema

Indie Rockers LOUDEN SWAIN Share Video for “Wine And Roses”

Los Angeles-based indie/alternative rock outfit LOUDEN SWAIN released their tenth studio album FEELINGS AND SUCH in November which they celebrated with an intimate hometown release show. Fronted by actor/musician Rob Benedict—who was recently cast on Season 4 of Amazon Prime’s “The Boys” and is best known for his recurring role as “Chuck/God” on the long-running CW hit series “Supernatural”—LOUDEN SWAIN is rounded out by a group of skilled musicians including co-founder/bassist Michael Borja, drummer Stephen Norton and guitarist Billy Moran. The quartet have shared a look behind-the-scenes of the ‘making of’ FEELINGS AND SUCH in the music video for the bracing album single “Wine And Roses.”

“‘Wine and Roses’ is about being quarantined in 2020,” says Benedict. “It reflects on the past few years and struggling to maintain sanity, specifically being isolated in a small room, losing touch with reality.”

LOUDEN SWAIN have developed a unique approach to touring due to Benedicts fanbase surrounding his role on “Supernatural.” The band appear at fan conventions specific to the show which are held across the globe monthly and see Louden Swain perform as the house band between actor’s panels along with booking a headlining gig that’s open to both convention attendees and the general public. The band are currently in Nashville, TN where they performed a headlining show this past Saturday on the 17th

Marking LOUDEN SWAIN’s 25-year anniversary, FEELINGS AND SUCH combines rock & roll swagger and melodic jangle with emotive, electrifying songs about pushing past challenges and turning one’s struggles into salvation. Its debut single “There’s The Rub” premiered on Popmatters who described it as “a tune that gets listeners up on their feet with its swagger” while praising Benedict’s “hearty vocal delivery” and crediting the band for “fuel(ing) its infectious energy with their instrumental performance.”

Co-produced by LOUDEN SWAIN and longtime collaborator Zackary Darling (The Temptations, John Waite), FEELINGS AND SUCH is an album rooted in trials and triumphs, whipped into shape by a band of rock & roll lifers who’ve had plenty of experience with both. BENEDICT had gone through a divorce, BORJA had recently lost his father, NORTON was battling colon cancer and everyone’s lives had been altered by the pandemic. Yet LOUDEN SWAIN continue to spread their optimistic outlook within its 13 tracks and throughout their upcoming live performances (full dates below).
