LIVE REVIEW: Godsmack and Staind Co-headline Summer Tour 2023

PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on July 29th

As the summer heats up here in New Jersey the summer concert season does too. On the heels of New Jerseys’ first real summer’s heat wave, rock fans from all over the state flocked to the PNC Bank Arts Center to see the hard rock music greats – Godsmack and Staind.

Written by Andris Jansons

First one came Mix Master Mike. DJ that has worked with many great artists and is mostly known for his work with Beastie Boys. While it might be a surprising choice for a DJ to open a rock show, it was perfect. Besides all the Beastie Boys hits, Mike played many rock and metal big hits to get the crowd going. He is also very familiar to the Godsmack fans as at least for the last two or so years he is the face of the intro that is played before Godsmack takes the stage.

And if there was anyone left in the crowd that needed an energy jolt, mother nature certainly stepped in to help with some thunderstorms rolling into the area. Just before Staind was supposed to take the stage one large storm finally reached the theater. One strong lighting strike shook the air and a downpour with gusty winds followed. Fans looked for shelter. However, there were quite a few that took it as a challenge or some extra experience and stayed out in the open celebrating each wind gust. Thankfully it was over fast enough, and it delayed the show only for about 20 minutes.

Staind is a well-seasoned rock band from Massachusetts, that has been around since 1995, with two stints in hiatus from the public eye. The band’s vocalist Aaron Lewis has released an extensive solo music collection and made some headlines for political opinion reasons.

The band opened with a brand-new song “Lowest In Me” from the upcoming album “Confessions Of The Fallen”. They followed with a few more up-tempo hits like Not Again and Just Go. I will certainly not draw favorites here, but for many Staind is bellowed because pf their ballads, and just by the middle of the set and Aaron’s solo of Epiphany, one of the biggest ones followed – Right Here. It wasn’t a long wait for all to indulge in dancing and singing to the other two – So Far Away and It’s Been Awhile. The set was properly wrapped up with thunderous Mudshovel.

See full photo gallery of Staind performance here.

Fellow Massachusetts rockers Godsmack’s set was also delayed because of an earlier thunderstorm. Day earlier in the Camden, NJ the band had to cancel their set due to the stormy weather. A white curtain covered the stage, and as mentioned earlier it was used as a screen to display Mix Master Mike’s intro of the Godsmack.

After proper Godsmack went straight to business with When Legends Rise and Cryin’ Like A Bitch. The third song 1000hp came with a proper stage flame thrower display.

Earlier in February of this year, the band released their eight-studio album called “Lighting Up The Sky”. Band performed three songs from latest release – You And I, What About Me and Surrender. Rest of the setlist stretched through the whole discography.

Of course, we had THE BATALLA DE LOS TAMBORES. A drum battle between bands vocalist Sully Erna (who is former drummer himself) and drummer Shannon Larkin. The biggest winners here of course were fans. Some snippets from rock and metal biggest hits played during the battle included Walk This Way, Back In Black, Enter Sandman and more.

For the encore the band played Under Your Scars, the song that addresses mental health issues. with Sully on the piano that had a link to the https://www.scarsfoundation.org/ , a charity organization started by Sully Erna. Such emotionally powerful moment was transformed into powerfully aggressive ending with bands mega hit I Stand Alone that was accompanied with a lot of flames.

BAD WOLVES Release New Single & Video “Bad Friend” via Better Noise Music

Platinum-certified hard rock heavyweights BAD WOLVES fuse unpredictable metallic intensity and impressive musicianship with arena-ready hooks. The group are excited to release across all digital platforms the first single, “Bad Friend,” from their highly anticipated studio album (title TBA) due later this year via Better Noise Music. Stream “Bad Friend” now HERE. “Bad Friend” brings awareness to recognizing the importance of cutting out people in your life who show toxic behavior and moving on from them. BAD WOLVES enlisted director Wombatfire (Asking Alexandria, Dream Theater) for its dark-themed music video.

‘Bad Friend’ exemplifies exactly where Bad Wolves always wanted to be as a band,” relays vocalist Daniel “DL” Laskiewicz. “It lives dead center of being melodically catchy as well as crushingly heavy and is a great representation of our new upcoming album. This song reminds us that TRUE friendship is not about being perfect or always saying the right thing but being there for each other through the good times and the bad. It’s also to be willing to acknowledge one’s own mistakes and make things right. If you can’t do that, you might be a bad f*cking friend.

Since 2018, BAD WOLVES, whose lineup consists of John Boecklin (drums), Doc Coyle (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Kyle Konkiel (bass, backing vocals), have earned a platinum plaque, topped iTunes, and continued to rule Active Rock radio charts with six #1 singles (“Hear Me Now,” “Killing Me Slowly,” “Lifeline,” “Remember When,” “Sober” and “Zombie”) and two Top 10 singles (“If Tomorrow Never Comes” at #2 and “Learn To Walk Again” at #10).  Their debut album, Disobey, made a Top 25 debut on the Billboard Top 200 and saw BAD WOLVES perform to sold-out audiences on multiple continents with heavyweights such as Five Finger Death Punch and Megadeth. 2019’s N.A.T.I.O.N. brought their total stream tally past the half-billion mark—unprecedented for a modern rock band.  On top of that, Loudwire hailed it among the “50 Best Rock Albums of 2019” as Billboard and Consequence of Sound chronicled their rise. In the midst of 2021, they welcomed Daniel “DL” Laskiewicz—previously of The Acacia Strain—as lead vocalist, ushering in a new chapter with their third full-length offering, Dear Monster.

BAD WOLVES are currently on a headlining tour with support from For The Fallen Dreams, The Funeral Portrait and Inimical Drive until July 28. Next, they head out with Asking Alexandria and The Hu on their co-headlining “Psycho Thunder” tour across the U.S. from August 30 to October 8. Tickets are on-sale now at https://badwolvesnation.com/pages/tour. See full dates listed below.

Boecklin shares: “Playing new material from our upcoming record with our label mates Asking Alexandria and The HU is exactly what we want to be doing this Fall. See y’all there!”

American Dream Machine Premieres “Fury”

AMERICAN DREAM MACHINE premiered “Fury”. This is the fourth single from the upcoming second full length record titled I Hate It Here.

“‘Fury’ is the heaviest song we have written so far, and Mitch had the bright idea to ask Brian if he would do a guest spot on it. He agreed, sent over his part and it blew us away. We couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.”Shawn Adams

“I worked on a project with Brian Wille after my time in Currents and before he joined the band. It’s been a while, so it was super refreshing to work with him again. I knew I could count on Brian to take the track up a notch”Mitch Lobuglio

“Happy to be part of this new American Dream Machine track! I’ve known the guys for a long time and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in store for them. The video was a lot of fun too – catch me as the angry sleep-deprived downstairs neighbor who’s sick of hearing them jam all night.”Brian Wille

“Short Skirts and Whiskey Shots” by Andrea Janov: The Latest Exciting Addition to Earth Island Books’

Earth Island Books is thrilled to announce the release of their latest publication, ‘Short Skirts and Whiskey Shots: Tales of Nights I Shouldn’t Have Made It Home Alive’ by Andrea Janov. Following the success of her first book, ‘Mix Tapes and Photo Albums,’ this 88-page collection of authentic emo-punk poetry tells poignant tales of punk-rock living in the Big Apple.

‘Short Skirts and Whiskey Shots’ is split into three compelling sections: ‘A Fifth Floor Walk-Up,’ ‘A Forfeited Security Deposit,’ and ‘A Terminated Lease.’ Janov draws readers into a gritty day-to-day journey of alternative lifestyle in New York City’s thriving music scene.

The collection captures the liminal phase between adolescence and adulthood, deep-rooted in New York’s vibrant streets, its lively bars, clubs, and tenements. It explores personal growth through recklessness and self-discovery and celebrates the learnings from life’s detours.

Andrea Janov, a dedicated punk rock kid, believes in the beauty of the ordinary, the power of the vernacular, and the history of the abandoned. She aims to reveal the power in what we see, say, do, ignore, and forget every day.

Janov comments: “I am a mess of contradictions, a fan of parallel structure, and a nostalgic pack rat. I write poetry about punk rock kids and take photos of forgotten places. My work strives to prove that poetry can be dirty, gritty, and accessible.”

Raised by rock-and-roll parents, Janov embraced the importance of attending concerts and ignoring “no trespassing” signs early on. She navigated through her small-town punk rock scene during adolescence and eventually escaped to New York City to cause a ruckus in Alphabet City. She met her husband in a Chelsea bar, settled in Pittsburgh, works in tech, and still prefers Jameson neat.

‘Short Skirts and Whiskey Shots’ is now available as an 88-page paperback or as an e-book. Order your copy directly from the Earth Island Books Store, at any good book shop, or online worldwide through the usual channels.

Ghost Spirit Celebrate Hardcore with “The Tradition That Remains” Single/Video

Ghost Spirit, the L.A. hardcore band who surprised fans in early June with the release of “Kill The Strife,” the group’s first new music in four years, have now released an additional single via Blue Swan/Rise Records: “The Tradition That Remains”

“’The Tradition That Remains’ is a heartfelt anthem celebrating the unbeatable spirit and promising future of the hardcore scene,” explains vocalist Alex Bigman of the Will Putney (Every Time I Die, Knocked Loose) mixed and Phil Odom (Code Orange, Portrayal of Guilt) engineered track. “Amid the Covid lockdowns, just like everyone else, we were deeply concerned about the fate of our beloved community’s shows. It seemed as though the very existence of the scene was at stake. Determined to rally the troops and reignite the passion, we set out to create a song that would unite us all. Out of the pandemic we overcame the challenges, and now in 2023 the scene feels more alive than ever. This music video, lovingly captured on Super 8mm, Super VHS, and digital formats, beautifully portrays the essence of this journey during the unforgettable run of our recent sold-out shows. We proudly declare that the tradition endures, binding us together in our shared love for hardcore, and illuminating a bright path towards the future.”

Ghost Spirit released Hourglass in 2019, with the 8-song album landing on Rolling Stone’s staff’s personal best of lists, and being praised by outlets for capturing the band’s DIY spirit. Idioteq said the collection is “sonically and thematically immense,” while Sputnik Music noted the band’s ability to juxtapose “tenderness and honesty” with “frantic guitar work… and the pained screams of Alex Bigman.”

The band is currently writing a new album with additional details to be revealed soon.

Ghost Spirit is Alex Bigman (vocals), Taylor Jewell (drums), Niko Zaglaras (guitar) and Evan Henkel (bass).

NEXT DOOR TO HEAVEN Premieres “Believe In Me”

“While choosing the next track for a music video we, first, intended to pick a more typical metal song but then we thought – why won’t we try another way and stay true to ourselves by not sticking to a specific narrow subgenre. Our previous music video for the track named ‘Commotion’ was a challenge, a scream and a position statement on war. ‘Believe In Me’ is a truly beautiful melody, with deep lyrics in the first part of the song. The second part, however, changes into metal sound and gives you the energy you’ve been searching for. We don’t want to become a very predictable band doing the same things over and over. This new video is just us being honest which sometimes means being more sensitive, sometimes rude or aggressive but not monotonous for sure.” – Next Door To Heaven

Next Door To Heaven is an international progressive/alternative metalcore band currently based in Los Angeles. After successful releases of the albums like Let’s Dream, that made it to the top-20 of Google Play and “V ways to accept” that gave a band an opportunity to sign their first contract, Next Door To Heaven created a few more singles, an EP Inside, relocated to Los Angeles and re-released its hit album V Ways To Accept in black edition adding an extra track to it.

Now the band is recording a new album that will be called Disguise (Mixed by Neil Engle).

Next Door To Heaven lineup:

Daria Mazunova – vocals, lyrics

Gene Mazunov – guitar, bass, vocals, composition, arrangements

Mike Moore – drums

Andrew Faust – bass guitar

SiM – A four-member (or last time we used four-piece) reggae punk band from Shonan, Kanagawa, Japan.

“We’re a band that was born in a live house, grew up in a live house, and we’ll die in a live house.” With sold-out significant solo performances at the Nippon Budokan and Yokohama Arena as well as organized the outdoor festival “DEAD POP FESTiVAL” for 20,000 people, SiM has risen to the top of the rock scene by “breaking convention from the inside” both in name and action, headlining at large outdoor rock festivals across the country.

In 2022, the transfer of the record company to PONY CANYON was announced. The newly written song The Rumbling was released as the theme song for Attack of Titan Final Season Part 2, which won the No.1 spot on the US Billboard chart 7 times in a row.

In 2023, the theme song for the anime Attack on Titan Final Season THE FINAL CHAPTERS Special 1, UNDER THE TREEwas released, which exceeded 10 million streams within 10 days, sweeping the world’s music charts.

They have successfully signed a contract with an overseas management/label, and in June, they performed their first UK festival, captivating an audience of more than 10,000 people. Furthermore, their sell-out headline performance in London amassed huge excitement.

In August, they will go on a 70,000-capacity tour of 27 cities in the United States, marking the start of their full-scale global expansion.

CROWBAR released their critically-adored Zero And Below full-length last year on MNRK Heavy. Produced, mixed, and mastered by Duane Simoneaux at OCD Recording And Production in Metairie, Louisiana, Zero And Below is the band’s most unforgivably doom-driven record since their 1998 landmark effort, Odd Fellows Rest. Led by Windstein, with guitarist Matt Brunson, bassist Shane Wesley, and drummer Tommy Buckley, songs like “Chemical Godz,” “It’s Always Worth The Gain,” and “Bleeding From Every Hole” are unapologetic emotional outpourings, with a bare-knuckle resolve alongside its soul-searching vulnerability, reliably delivered with crushing heaviness.

Decibel Magazine hailed a record that’s, “as dark and heavy as a midnight avalanche.” Kerrang! gushed, “CROWBAR have cemented themselves as a pillar of sludge metal… delivering guitar hooks with more bite force than an alligator.” Added Metal Injection, “It’s slow (but not too slow) and dark and heavy as the swamps are deep. Their music makes you feel like you’re trudging in the marshlands around Lake Martin in the middle of the night while being slowly pursued by some deviously hungry gators.”

Zero And Below is available on CD, LP, cassette, and digitally. Preview and purchase the record at THIS LOCATION.
