After more than five decades of arena-shaking performances, era-defining hits, and one of the most enduring catalogs in rock history, Journey is concluding their massive Final Frontier Tour. On October 25th the band played their final show for their loyal New Jersey fans at The Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

When I mention Journey to my kids the reaction is like, oh my God that is your dad’s band. Are they still around? Yes and Yes. However, every generation knows their songs and wants to see their shows. Even Gen Z knows all of their biggest hits like Any Way You Want It and Don’t Stop Believin’, and many, many more. Their songs are timeless and have earned the band immortality. Journey was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on April 7, 2017, including original members and their former lead singer Steve Perry, who gave acceptance speech but let Arnel Pineda to perform live.
Current Journey lineup features Neal Schon (lead guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals), Arnel Pineda (lead vocals), Deen Castronovo (drums, vocals), Jason Derlatka (keyboards, vocals) and Todd Jensen (bass, vocals).
Newark arena was full to the brim. I saw many people outside the The Rock (nickname for Prudential Center) asking for extra tickets. Jorney faithfuls flocked to arena in great numbers. You know, I mentioned that is is dubbed as their farewell tour, but I’ve seen far too many farewell shows and tours and then some time later a change in heart, and the touring to resume and new music released. Was this in fact goodbye and more will follow is to be seen.
The show itself was everything that you would expect from Journey. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame caliber show. Worth every penny. Arnel Pineda gives this band the necessary youthful energy at the vocals to make all of their positive, upbeat songs the angle they need. Full of smiles and energy he complements longtime band members delivering the show the fans and the band deserve. I emphasize that because I’ve seen some bands carry on at the time when they no longer should, and some injection of young blood makes Journey just as lively as in its heydays. We (photographers) were given heads up on guitar solo of Shon and Cain together at the piano, the two longest active members of the band, and we were able to capture that moment (see below and in title).
Unofficial set list for the night: Be Good to Yourself, Stone in Love, Ask the Lonely, Only the Young, Just the Same Way, Lights, When You Love a Woman, Of a Lifetime, La Do Da, Escape, Girl Can’t Help It, Precious Time, Chain Reaction, Dead or Alive, Anytime, Who’s Crying Now, Open Arms, Never Walk Away, Keep On Runnin’, Suzanne, Wheel in the Sky, Faithfully, Don’t Stop Believin’, Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’, Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) and Any Way You Want It.
