LIVE REVIEW: From Ashes To New Blackout Tour Part 1

At The Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ on November 25th, 2023 with The Word Alive, Catch Your Breath and EKOH

American rock band From Ashes To New has embarked on a 20 date fall tour Blackout Part 1 to support their latest album Blackout released in July of this year. They are supported by The Word Alive, Catching Your Breath and Ekoh. On November 25th the show took place in New Jersey.

Written by Andris Jansons

First one on the stage came Ekoh. A rapper from Las Vegas that has his own style with more Rock and alternative sound, independent artist who has released eight albums to date since 2013. Ekoh enjoys strong social media presence as he has chosen it over a traditional musician / band way of conducting business and getting your work out to audience. He had DJ and drummer accompanying him on the stage. His show was fast paced and well received by fans. During the song called Villain, Ekoh “went” into the crowd and was held upwards during the first part of the song and then crowd surfed back on the stage.

Next was metalcore band from Texas called Cath Your Breath. They are a new band on the scene and released their debut album Shame On Me last month. Their biggest hit Dial Tone drawing attention from Sirius XM and other major outlets. Conveniently one of their songs Mirror is a collaboration with the rapper Ekoh, and he joined the band on the stage for a live performance. All together you could see why the band is gathering everyone’s attention as their performance was well put together and professional.

Ok, now we are entering heavyweight territory. With seven studio albums under their belt The Word Alive has become one of the metalcore / post hardcore mainstays. The last studio album Hard Reset was just released this August through Thriller Records. Previous work was done with Fearless Records. The band has undergone many changes but as long as Tyler Smith (Telle) is there, TWA will always have that unmistakable sound.

This was my third time seeing and hearing TWA live, and they did not disappoint. Telle is considered as one of the premier vocalists of the genre and he proves that every time. While Telle is not the founding member, he is the second longest active member of the band behind the lone founder Zack Hansen.

On this tour the emphasis is on the new material as five of nine songs are from the Hard Reset, as they opened the set with Strange Love and closed it with New Reality. Somewhere closer to the end of the set The Word Alive played on their biggest hits Trapped, and Telle was able to summon the nights first “wall of death”. And as I mentioned before, the live performances of the TWA are the sight to behold – bold, loud and exhilarating.

From Ashes To New are one of the modern rock trailblazers, combining more traditional metal and rock music sounds with now popular hip hop and rap. Yes, we have many rap rock bands and many hardcore bands like Biohazard employ more rapping than singing, however From Ashes To New really stand out as leaders of their generation.

The band released their debut album Day One in 2016 via Better Noise and followed with three more since with the latest one Blackout released on July 28th of this year via Better Noise as well. Blackout is apocalyptic album that encapsulates the distress of the pre-apocalyptic world the band built with their groundbreaking debut album Day One, while mirroring the angst and unrest the world felt during the 2020 pandemic at which time it was written.

The stage was set with many large screens that displayed post-apocalyptic images to emphasize the theme and set the tone for their performance. Lance Dowdle, the lead guitarist and bassist is known for his love of anime, and wears masks during the show, which helps the overall setting of the bands stand-out appearance.

While vocalist Matt Brandyberry is the lone founding member of the band, the current lineup is together for a while now and on this tour are joined by the Jimmy Bennett on guitar. And they all mesh together very well.

Just as with TWA, From Ashes To New setlist was concentrating our attention to a new material from Blackout album with eight out of twelve songs played on this tour. All new and old material came together for one well put together performance that was enjoyed by all in attendance. As some would expect them being meant only for the younger audience, that was not true at all in Sayreville, as all age groups of the fans were present equally.

For the encore the band worked to get us all in holiday spirit by playing their version of dreaded by many Mariah Carey Christmas classic All I Want For Christmas Is You. Once you get past thoughts about Mariah Carey their version is actually very cool. Then they went out with a bang, one of their biggest hits Through It All.

FROM ASHES TO NEW Apocalyptic Concept Album “Blackout” Out Today via Better Noise Music

Share Lyric Video for “Monster In Me”

FROM ASHES TO NEW continue to break their way into the top of the 21st century rock vanguard with their compelling new album BLACKOUT, out today (July 28), via BETTER NOISE MUSIC. Conceptually, BLACKOUT encapsulates the distress of the pre-apocalyptic world the Lancaster, PA band built with their groundbreaking 2016 debut DAY ONE, while mirroring the angst and unrest the world felt during the 2020 pandemic at which time it was written. Sonically, FROM ASHES TO NEW deliver a fresh spin on the sound that broke them onto the scene with their distinctive blend of hard rock, hip-hop, electronic and alternative music. BLACKOUT was produced by vocalist Matt Brandyberry, alongside longtime collaborators and producers Grant McFarland and Carson Slovak at Atrium Audio in PA.It features 12 tracks including their fifth-ever Top 10-charting rock radio single “Hate Me Too,” which peaked at #8 on Mediabase charts, and their latest anthemic single “Nightmare” which is now climbing the charts at Active Rock radio. Stream and/or download BLACKOUT or grab a physical copy on CD, vinyl or cassette at https://fatn.ffm.to/blackoutalbum.

“‘Blackout’ is our prequel to ‘Day One,’” says co-vocalist Matt Brandyberry. “‘Day One’ was a strong representation of the style that made FATN who we are today, and ‘Blackout’ is a step above. The world seems to be headed further and further towards chaos and destruction, so it only felt right to create a piece to paint the picture we are all becoming all too familiar with. Expect much more of this from us in the future!”

“‘Blackout is the album we’ve always wanted to make,” relays co-vocalist Danny Case. “It’s intense, emotional, heavy, and most importantly, it’s us. This album truly represents who we are as a band and its massive sound will prove to be our best record yet. We are so incredibly proud of this album, and we are confident it will quickly become our fans’ favorite From Ashes To New record ever.”

FROM ASHES TO NEW Announce Summer Tour with In This Moment, Motionless in White & Fit For A King

With four Top 10 singles, over 600 million all-time streams and more than 75 million video views to date, FROM ASHES TO NEW deliver a distinctive blend of hard rock, hip-hop, electronic and alternative music which will be further highlighted on their forthcoming album BLACKOUT due July 28 via Better Noise Music. The Lancaster, PA-based group will be giving fans across the U.S. a sneak preview of new material as they continue their current tour alongside rock luminaries Shinedown and Three Days Grace throughout May 9, followed by a short run of dates alongside Bullet For My Valentine surrounding festival appearances including Welcome to Rockville and Sonic Temple.

Earlier this week, FROM ASHES TO NEW announced they will continue to tour throughout the summer supporting In This Moment and Motionless In White on “The Dark Horizon Tour” alongside Fit For A King from July 8 to August 19. General public tickets go on sale today, Friday, April 14 at 10:00 A.M. local time at https://fromashestonew.com/tour. A full list of upcoming tour dates can be found at the bottom of this page.

BLACKOUT conceptually acts as a prequel to FROM ASHES TO NEW’s 2016 debut album DAY ONE and encapsulates the distress of a pre-apocalyptic world mirroring the frame of mind the world felt during the 2020 pandemic at which time the album was written. The 12-track album was recorded with FROM ASHES TO NEW’s longtime collaborators and producers Grant McFarland and Carson Slovak to deliver a fresh spin on the sound that broke them onto the scene. With previously released tracks including “Until We Break (feat. Matty Mullins of Memphis Mayfire),” “Nightmare,” “Heartache” and their latest single, “Hate Me Too,” FROM ASHES TO NEW captivate listeners with heavy driven music and angsty lyrics that all walks of people can find common ground with. FROM ASHES TO NEW Deliver Heavy Rock Anthem “NIGHTMARE”

FROM ASHES TO NEW have delivered an intense and captivating new single “Nightmare,” taken from their upcoming as-yet-titled fourth album due this summer via Better Noise Music. “Nightmare masterfully showcases dual vocalists Matt Brandyberry and Danny Case expertise in contrasting heavy rock anthemic choruses with nu-metal/rap rock verses. ”Nightmare” takes listeners through the emotions of being betrayed and the nightmares that result which are presented in the track’s accompanying apocalyptic-themed music video directed by Josiahx (Distrubed, Miss May I).

“Betrayal by someone we trust happens to the best of us,” says CASE. “We befriend someone, let them in, build a connection and then all of a sudden they turn into someone unrecognizable. Someone you once trusted and cared for so deeply is now a backstabbing enemy. In a heartbeat, the person you once thought you knew is now gone. There aren’t many things in life that cut quite as deep as betrayal. Erasing that person from your life and moving forward is the only way to wake up from the nightmare.”

Stream “Nightmare” on all digital platforms HERE.

he Lancaster, PA-based group—Brandyberry (vocals), Case (vocals), Lance Dowdle (guitars) and Mat Madiro (drums)—will be on tour this spring, joining fellow Top 10 active rock-charting acts Shinedown and Three Days Grace across the East Coast and Midwest from April 3 to May 9 before appearing as some of the summer’s largest rock festivals including Welcome To Rockville (5/19 – Daytona Beach, FL) and Sonic Temple (5/27 – Columbus, OH). For tickets and dates, visit fromashestonew.com/tour.

Hailed as the “sweet spot of mass appeal where there’s a little something for everyone” (Knotfest), FROM ASHES TO NEW’s blend of hard rock, hip-hop, electronic and alternative music has built them a diverse and dedicated fanbase while garnering over 345 million streams55 million video views and four Top 10 singles. Prior to “Nightmare,” the band released two additional tracks from their forthcoming album: the reflective single “Heartache” and the fiery, vindictive track “Until We Break (feat. Matty Mullins of Memphis Mayfire)” which was also featured on the official soundtrack for the horror-thriller The Retaliators in which the band also appeared in with a guest role.
