Having covered a ton of concerts in the past, it’s always a great surprise to cover and report two different styles of music on one amazing night: MIDWIFE with her beautiful ethereal soft melodic sounds and the headliner BLOOD INCANTATION, a hard Progressive Rock/Death Metal Band with lots of aggressive and amplified guitars, bass, and drums with a touch of Pink-Floydish sounds. Two different styles but for some reason seamlessly work very well together on this tour.

MIDWIFE, aka Madeline Elizabeth Johnston, with her minimalistic, dreamlike, and soft style of rock, started off the night giving the audience a nice slow moody vibe introduction to wet everyone’s appetite for the headliner. Listening to MIDWIFE sing is almost like being in a state of transcendental peace with oneself as if one is outside with Mother Nature laying down in an open field at night gazing at the stars on a clear blue sky and enjoying the nice and soft breeze of the winds.

What a delight. The audience were mesmerized and welcomed this artist because she is the Ying of what’s about to Yang.

BLOOD INCANTATION, the headliner. One word…WHOA (insert mind blown emoji here). Talk about the Yang on this night. A prog rock death metal band full of teenage angst and they are far from being teenagers. These guys blew my beanie off my head.

Sometimes I like to be surprised when I shoot and cover for my online media outlet, SLR MAGAZINE. So on this night I didn’t do my homework and I asked my friend Richey Rose, the sound engineer for The Regent (who is also in a band called Songs For Sabotage) who and what is BLOOD INCANTATION all about.

He immediately said, “Don, you will be in for a surprise of your life. They are hard. The are progressive. They are death metal. And they are Pink Floyd-ish as well.”

Sure enough, Richey was spot on describing their sounds. HARD, FAST, PROGRESSIVE, AND PINK-FLOYDISH at the same time. This is a band that is technically proficient with their instruments and know how to rock hard.

Lot of mosh pits. Lots of fans with their horns up. Lots of crowd surfers. Prog Death Metal Rock at it’s finest.

What a great night to have experienced shooting in a venue where I have never shot before. To have experienced a nice melodic dreamlike music by MIDWIFE. And then to be topped off with some hard and heavy sounds of Prog/Death Metal Rock by BLOOD INCANTATION.

In conclusion, a different way to describe this night is like this…MIDWIFE is the appetizer for a fine dining cuisine on Prom night and BLOOD INCANTATION is the Main Course on a Prom night with someone yelling during the middle of the dinner…”FOOD FIGHT!” And all hell broke loose.

Definitely a fun and different night.
