Following a 2024 that included sharing her first vocal EP Home Music, playing several major festivals and even starting a podcast, LA-based artist, producer, multi-instrumentalist and educator Bad Snacks announces a new EP today, entitled MIDNIGHT, out via Nettwerk on August 29.

“The idea behind MIDNIGHT,” shares Bad Snacks, “was to encapsulate all the things I’d envision in my dream slumber party; throwbacks to late 90s house, a healthy dose of jazz, moodier jams à la LA’s Low End Theory, and prompts for meaningful heart-to-heart conversations. It’s a body of work that explores the lines between joy, thoughtfulness, and bold statements. The tracks flow from weightless and sparkling to velvet and moody to strong and unapologetic to warm and comforting in the span of 23 minutes, and it’s an honest reflection of how seamlessly we can shift between conversations and between contexts. In its making, I also realized how it became a deep-dive into an expression of feminine energy.”

Last year saw Bad Snacks play several high-profile festivals—North Coast Fest, Same Same But Different and Portland Jazz Fest, to name a few—and it was these environments that helped shape the sonics of MIDNIGHT. The result was a project that embraced contrast on the production side, where minimalist moments help give extra juice to the big swells.

“This EP focuses much more on undeniable grooves, on moments I can share with an audience, and the tension and space in between that makes every other moment come to life,” Bad Snacks shares. “My comfort zone has always been about layering textures, synths, and strings, but I really tried to step out and carve out more space – sometimes literal silence. It’s been a massive exercise in restraint while also learning how to push things way further.”

Also today, Bad Snacks announces “show me how u do it!,” a new single that’s equal parts playful and punchy, and overall impossible not to move to. Laced with 90s electro-femme flair, vocal chops, and a sizzling sax solo from Nicole McCabe, the track blends dance floor heat with a bit of jazzed-up mischief.

“It’s fun, a little cheeky, and built for bodies in motion,” she shares on the track, adding: “Nicole McCabe… is a lightning rod of a saxophonist who can rip incredibly hard and incredibly beautifully.”

Another key collaborator on MIDNIGHT was Noah Kellman, a producer and pianist also immersed in LA’s jazz/electronic space.

[Noah is] a dynamite keyboardist and harmony genius who was able to elevate this project to the stars with even just a few short cameos,” shares Bad Snacks. “I’m very lucky to be a part of the LA music scene, because very few other places on earth allow for the mesh between jazz and electronic music quite like we do here.”

ABOUT

Bad Snacks is a producer and multi-instrumentalisthailing from Boston, MA and is known for creating violin-infused genre-bending electronic music. Rich with lofi and dance influences, Bad Snacks’s catalog boasts an expansive landscape featuring lush strings, driving basslines, and hard-hitting grooves. From the studio to the dancefloor, her music resonates with audiences globally and has brought her talents to renowned stages such as Red Rocks Amphitheater (Morrison, CO), El Rey (Los Angeles, CA), and The Ogden Theatre (Denver, CO) alongside artists including Anomalie, Tycho and LP Giobbi.

Growing up, she found a love of music early on and began playing the violin at the age of three. However, it wasn’t until she moved to Los Angeles that she truly discovered her sonic identity as Bad Snacks by immersing herself in the city’s underground music scene. There, she found the inspiration she needed to create her own unique sound, drawing on influences from a slew of genres including hip-hop, jazz, and electronica; she has since crafted a style that has been described as “gorgeous” together with “stank-face worthy”.

After going viral on Andrew Huang’s “4 Producers” challenge (4.5M views), Bad Snacks released several instrumental beat tapes to enthusiastic reception, establishing a sound often compared to the stylizations of J Dilla, KAYTRANADA, and TOKiMONSTA. Last year, she further evolved her discography with her first vocal EP Home Music, showcasing her abilities as a songwriter. Taking a more expansive and upbeat direction, her live shows and DJ sets are notable for their dynamic energy and finesse for combining a synthesized violin and jazzy vocals over “beautiful, filthy” instrumentals.

Bad Snacks’ contributions to the global beat-making community hasn’t gone unnoticed, as she has been featured on Brainfeeder’s “The Hit,” KCRW, NTS radio, Dublab, and Kitsuné Musique. Additionally, she runs a successful YouTube channel (128k+ subscribers) where she posts content related to music technology and beat breakdowns. Due to her love for cutting-edge music tech, she has worked as a key demonstrator with several of the industry’s largest names like Ableton, Roland, Spectrasonics, and Moog. Additionally, she has taught as an Assistant Professor at Berklee College of Music for Electronic Production & Design.

Her love outside of electronic music and music education expands mostly to her dog Bean.
