This week we had another really cool night at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles with Laufey (pronounced Lay-Vay) dropping by LA’s Grammy Museum rooftop stage in advance of her upcoming arena tour.
Laufey has had a meteoric rise in popularity in recent years resulting in her selling out the Hollywood Bowl last year and this year playing large arenas tour that will include multiple nights at Madison Square Garden, Crypto.com Arena and more.
The typical format for Grammy Museum events is an interview portion, usually by a noted journalist or celebrity interviewer, followed by audience Q&A and short concert set. For Laufey the interviewer was noted music artist, producer and Sirius/XM host Peter Asher. There is a connection here as Peter Asher just produced this year’s latest Barbara Streisand duets album The Secret of Life: Partners, Volume Two which included Barbara and Laufey performing the Laufey-penned song “Letter To My 13 Year Old Self”. The interview was pretty masterfully crafted by Mr. Asher and touched upon her life growing up in a musical family, the challenges of being mixed-race (Icelandic-Chinese), attaining expertise on the cello, getting a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College Of Music, using the COVID downtime to create and post songs on social media which gained legions of followers and resulted in her getting a record deal and resultant rise in popularity. The interview was very insightful showing how her life experience develops into her music. We also learned that she had two primary career paths in life, Economics or Music! It was actually her Chinese mother (a noted symphony level violinist) who told her “you’re a pop star, that’s your path”. After a brief Q&A we were all treated to a nice mini concert set of her hits along with sneak previews of music from her latest album being released August 21st. All-in-all a very charming and beautiful evening from one of the hottest music acts.
