Annie Lennox: Retrospective the First Book by the Award-Winning Songwriter and Recording Artist was just released this past September. Here in SoCal we have Live Talks LA that hosts great talks with cultural icons and this past weekend hosted Annie for a wonderful afternoon to talk about this amazing new book and Annie’s life as one of the greatest rock singers of our time. Leading the discussion was noted rock journalist Lori Majewski who has had a long history with publications such as US Weekly, Entertainment Weekly, Spin, Rolling Stone and more and has followed with Ms. Lennox closely over her career. The discussion basically mirrored the book which in chronological order starts with Annie’s family in Scotland, her upbringing and familial influences, studying of music and her voyage into the world of rock starting off with her first group The Tourists, rock duo The Eurythmics along with her solo career with highlights such as her performances with the likes of David Bowie, Aretha Franklin and more.
The afternoon event mirrored the flow of the book which tells the story with over 200 images from childhood to the present. The quality is over-the-top good and in the hour leading to this event thoroughly enjoyed it from cover to cover. The photos tell the story with descriptives penned by Annie that give the reader the cool insights. For fans this gives us the great memories of Annie we all know of plus some familial details that are new to us. For folks not knowing of her remarkable career this book serves as a great primer to show her place in our music, culture and humanity over five decades. It’s hard to put it all in words but this afternoon was fulfilling in this time of cultural divide and with Annie’s messaging of art, music and love we all left with a smile on our face — thank you Annie!
