Swedish progressive metal legends Opeth jump started their winter North American tour in New Jersey along with fellow Swedish counterparts Katatonia. Opeth is touring in the support of their latest album The Last Will and Testament. New Jersey show was the first show on the outing and it was an officially a sold out show.

Katatonia is a perfect fit to tour with Opeth, their dark doom sound blends perfectly with Opeth’s melodic progressive metal compositions. While musically there were a lot of areas of similarity, the bands vocalist Jonas Renkse provides the band with signature doom / gothic voice. Jonas is also bands sole founding member. Band was very well received by New Jersey fans. They played three songs from their last years release Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State, and filling rest of their time with the fan favorites with the loudest reception reserved for Lethean. For the fan delight and photographers plight the band set the gothic / doom mood with dark stage presence and mostly red or blue light barely illuminating the band members.

Opeth are in the league of their own when it come to the progressive metal. Field pretty saturated with the great artists that excel in their craft. For me personally Dream Theater has always stood out from the pack and I had just randomly listened to others. So my knowledge in Opeth material was limited in just professional contact and not as a music fan. Opeth clearly opened my eyes.

We will start with their appearance. Bands leader, vocalist and founding member Mikael Åkerfeldt, strikes you more a Americana performer than Swedish progressive metal performer with his a bit 70’s Led Zeppelin visual touch.

Musically their compositions reminded me of my prog faves, long and complex with a lot of tempo changes, though what set them apart was Mikael’s voice that can be attributed to the strong influence of death metal.

Everything about this band spoke of legendary. Opeth are truly a stalwarts of the genre. No matter if you listen to their older material or a fan of new releases, their show delivered it all.
