At The Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ on October 10, 2024

Two of the thrash metal biggest legends Testament and Kreator have joined forces to deliver the raucous performances across North America this fall on Klash Of The Titans Tour. Both bands are rocking the crowds for forty years and transcending the fan generations that are packing the venues wherever these bands go. On October 10th these Titans of thrash metal came to The Wellmont Theater in Montclair, New Jersey to a fully packed venue.

German legends Kreator had a black curtain raised to conceal the stage, while on both sides of the curtain you had huge demons peeking out towards the crowd. Another legendary bands Iron Maiden mega hit Run To The Hills served as the atmosphere setting intro, before the stage was lit in red lights and curtain fell with smoke machines throwing the fog to the Kreator blasting their song Hate Über Alles, the title track from Kreator’s latest release in 2022.

Kreator played a set filled with their biggest hits spanning all their career. Names of their songs are not for fainthearted – 666 – World Divided, Satan Is Real, Enemy OF God and Phantom Antichrist. They have been widely credited as a strong black metal influence by many in that sub genre of metal music.

Many times through their performance bands leader Miland “Mille” Petrozza called for a wall of death. His calls were always answered by fans. I found it to be a nice touch of him doing countdown in German. There was no letting down for Kreator, each song delivered a healthy and heavy dose of heavy metal, like non-stop. To the delight of the fans, for the conclusion Kreator played Pleasure To Kill , a title track from their sophomore album in 1986.

Testament used white curtain to conceal the stage inscribed by graphics from their 2001 album First Strike Still Deadly. Testament used background images depicting their artwork associated with their recent album art. The intro was – Beatie Boys song Fight For Your Right (To Party). Hey, I absolutely love Beastie Boys, and I was not the only one vibing to it. American legends from Berkeley, California have undergone some significant amount of lineup changes, though currently they have together many of long time members “classic lineup” including Eric Peterson, Chuck Billy, Alex Skolnick and Steve Di Giorgio, only with Chris Dovas on drums being a “new guy” on the band.

Testament went straight to blasting a heavy songs one after another. Unlike Kreator, Testament concentrated only on their first two studio albums – The Legacy released in 1987 and The New Order released in 1988 giving their fans literally a time travel back to their early days. Of course it coincides with the fact that Testament has released remastered versions of those albums both digitally and on vinyl via Nuclear Blast Records on July 12th this year.

Testament showed no rust. Everyone let it all out on stage, and made it truly remarkable performance, showing their fans that thrash metal is still alive and relevant.
