Three times the charm. Three times the fun. Three times the smiles. Three times the badassery. And three times the threat. This brand new LA based All-Female Rock Band called THE DEFFADES delivered a spectacular performance at HOUSE OF BLUES ANAHEIM’s THE FOUNDATION ROOM, entertaining a room full of fans, friends, guests, and family.

THE DEFFADES consist of three very fun, full of smiles, and extremely charming young ladies who have been friends for quite sometime and have dreamt of being in a band since they were kids. THE DEFFADES are the following FUN-tastic and outstanding artists who all share LEAD VOCALS for their band:
* 18 year old, Edie Anderson on Drums and Vocals.
* 18 year old, Ruby Blackburn on Bass and Vocals
* 18 year old, Charlotte Callahan on Guitar and Vocals
Their journey in music began as early as 6 years old when long time friends Edie and Ruby started playing and dreamt of being in a Rock Band. At one point in their pre-teens, the two friends even made a whole album cover when they were 12 years old. They met Charlotte later on in their early teens and have been friends ever since.
Being big fans of THE BEATLES, Charlotte and Edie explained to me how they came about with their band name. THE DEFFADES is a play of words stemming from the word “Deaf” as in not being able to hear and the word “Aid” just like a First Aid. Edie further explained to me that since they are big fans of THE BEATLES, in the beginning of the song “TWO OF US”, John Lennon kind of ad libs the words “deaf aids” and a light bulb hit them when they heard this and wanted to use those two words and combine them as one for the name of their band. But they wanted to spell it with a twist to make it stand out and unique. Thus, the birth of the band’s name came, THE DEFFADES.
The band really came into fruition in the summer of 2023 with the goal of playing local venues in LA. They have been writing their own music since its birth and played their very first show in October of 2024 at the small venue called The Redwood Bar in Downtown LA.
I first came across THE DEFFADES when they performed for Ella Jay Basco’s music showcase called FEMININE ENERGY at The Bourbon Room in December 2024. Covering that night for SLR MAGAZINE, I was quickly impressed with their performance on stage and wanted to hear and see them again. They did play again in Orange County in January of 2025 and I wanted to see more but due to a prior engagement, despite me being so close to their show, my schedule just didn’t quite work out despite me being in Orange County on the night they played in January.

But The stars were all aligned on March 7, 2025 with my schedule being free. On this night at HOB ANAHEIM’s THE FOUNDATION ROOM, They performed 8 originals and two covers (They currently have 10 originals and they are currently working on an album of all their originals). Though there were some sound and technical challenges on this night, THE DEFFADES gracefully accepted the challenges they faced and still delivered an outstanding performance. Honestly, I didn’t really notice those challenges they faced, perhaps maybe because I was too focused (pun intended) in capturing moments of their great performance and the audience were so supportive, always cheering them on throughout the night. One thing is for sure, their music is unique and beautiful. It’s an amalgamation of classic rock infused with modern rock and alternative rock, think The Beatles meeting The Bangles blending them together and adding hints of Sleater Kinney and Hole in the mix. All three ladies share the mic as Lead Vocals taking turns singing, something you don’t see a lot or something you don’t see at all. I have never seen it until I saw them back in December of 2024. Their stage presence and performance are nothing short of being outstanding with constant audience interaction and beautiful singing and playing. Truly impeccable and fueled with great confidence for only being 18 years old. Edie, Ruby, and Charlotte are gracefully paving their way to success and making their dreams come true, one step at a time. Keep an eye out for THE DEFFADES. They are on their way to greatness.
