In our continuing series of highlighting the LA Music Scene we now bring you a long-running series called Monday Monday. Created by LA music artist Joel Eckels in 2013 this weekly event takes place on Mondays at the Hotel Café, an iconic venue for indie and national acts. The format is several artists who do a short three song set typically solo or sometimes accompanied by another musician or two. It’s a mix of SoCal based artists as well as touring national artists making their way through LA. The whole evening is like a family, intimate and personal. This particular evening, episode #426 served as a celebration of the life of Monday Monday patron John Skoog who died last year at the age of 86. John was a weekly regular who always sat in the same chair at the same table each week, left side of the audience next to the backstage door. He was a true music fan whose wife had passed away years ago and following this loss became a Monday Monday regular, sometimes going backstage to deliver kudos to artists that he thought were especially good. celebration show it featured several of John’s favorite artists as a tribute, all female except for host Joel Eckels.
In his role of selecting/curating these shows Joel does an exceptional job of find the best from the world of indie singer/songwriter artists. I’ve attended several times and each show has been really good. This series will pause in May as the Hotel Café closes its doors to go on hiatus until a new Hotel Café opens within the next year or two several blocks west in Hollywood. In the meantime it is hoped that we’ll see Joel doing pop-up events from time to time until the new Hotel café opens.
