I had the chance to talk to the singer JR Guzman frontman of Echo Spine recently, talked about the band, musical influences, and some upcoming opportunities in the works. Here’s a little bit of our conversation. The band consists of:
J.R.: vocalist
Robert A(Monks): drummer
Sergio (Thumper):bassist
Jake: guitarist
Aaron: guitarist
Arnold: guitarist
How did the band come together? Was it specific moment or gradual?
Echo Spine came together organically rather than in a single defining moment. The foundation was built through long standing friendships with Robert “Monks” and Sergio “Thumper” being friends for over 20+ years growing up in Los Angeles and moving through various bands in the local scene. The turning point came when JR relocated from Stockton to Los Angeles and in 2025 answered an audition call for a vocalist from a previous member. The connection was immediate and while the band was operating under a different name at the time, it soon evolved into Echo Spine.
From there, the lineup solidified through trust and community. Aaron joined through long-time friendships with past and present members, while jake and Arnold were brought in through mutual band connections and word-of-mouth within the LA scene. The result is Echo Spine, a band shaped by history, chemistry and the strength of its musical network.
What are some of your musical influences and how do they shape your style.
Echo Spine’s sound draws from a wide and diverse range of influences that span multiple eras. As an ‘80s kid, i was first shaped by the era’s synth driven and new wave landscape, taking inspiration from artists like Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls, Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, etc..
In the 1990s that foundation evolved as heavier and more aggressive styles took hold. As a teenager i gravitated toward the emerging nu-metal and alternative scenes, discovering bands such as Korn, Deftones, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Coal Chamber, System of a Down, Limp Bizkit, etc… Korn in particular, served as a major gateway influence after first hearing them in 1994 opening the door to a deeper exploration of heavier music that continues to resonate today.
These combined influences melodic, atmospheric and heavy, help shape Echo Spine’s dynamic sound (at least from my end), blending emotional texture with intensity and edge.
How do you collaborate within the bend on the creation of a song?
Echo Spine’s songwriting process is rooted in collaboration and chemistry. It typically begins with a guitar idea whether from Jake, Aaron, or Arnold who lay down the initial riffs and harmonic direction. From there, Robert “Monks” builds the rhythmic foundation, crafting drum patterns that lock in with the guitar’s energy and structure. Sergio “Thumper” then brings in the bass, shaping the low-end and helping the arrangement evolve into a more complete framework.
Once the core instrumentation is in motion, I step in to observe, refinenand contribute melodic and conceptual ideas from an outside perspective, helping shape the vocal direction and overall feel of the track. Every member contributes creatively throughout the process, refining and reshaping ideas until the song is fully realized.
In essence, Echo Spine builds from the ground up… guitars spark the idea, rhythm gives it life, bass gives it weight, and vocals bring it home.
What’s the best part of working with each other and what makes your band unique?
What makes Echo Spine work so well is the genuine chemistry between everyone involved. Offstage there’s a strong sense of brotherhood, plenty of humor, lightheartedness and the ability to not take things too seriously within the band. At the same time, there’s a clear switch that flips when it’s time to perform… on stage, it’s all professionalism and focus.
Each member brings a distinct personality and musical identity to the table, but those differences are exactly what make the band cohesive. The dynamic is rooted in individuality working in sync, different “flavors” coming together to form a unified sound. Every member contributes something essential and that collective energy is what defines Echo Spine both creatively and live.
So pretty much what I’m saying is we’re all different types of meat dipped in the same sauce… And I dig it
What’s next for the band? Any upcoming projects towards your plans are excited about?
Echo Spine is currently building strong momentum with a series of key live performances and upcoming milestones. The band has several shows lined up throughout the Los Angeles area, with a major highlight being their June 19th performance at the Whisky a Go Go in support of Orgy. This sold-out show is shaping up to be a defining moment for us, following previous standout experiences such as performing at NAMM.
From there, the momentum continues with some surprises in the works over the summer and kicking off the fall. Keep your eyes on our IG and Facebook pages for those announcements. These opportunities mark a significant step forward as Echo Spine continues to share stages with established names in the genre.
Beyond live performances, the band is currently in pre-production, working toward recording a demo with plans to expand into a full record. With eyes set on potential touring later in the year, Echo Spine is focused on growth, momentum, and continuing to elevate their presence within the scene.
