If Pantera says this is the heaviest metal tour of the summer, nobody better challenge that. The vulgar display of power coupled by Scandinavian Viking metal will make anyone shiver in fear. It was truly Fucking Hostile on this very special September 8th night in New Jersey. This was postponed show from July 31st due to Prince of Darkness Ozzy Osbourne passing, when the band decided to allow some time for mourning of the legend.

Nordic Gods arrived at the shores of Jersey. Just as Viking forays in Saxon territories, Swedish Vikings in the form of Amon Amarth sailed here to conquer us. Melodic death metal band formed more than three decades ago are exploring themes about viking history and mythology and are often refereed to as viking metal band, though they rather prefer to be addressed as melodic death metal band, to place accent on their music style. Though fans don’t care, to us – vikings they are!

First time I saw them about five or six years ago and they had a life-size viking ship on the stage spewing smoke and with glowing red eyes. The other time they fought some giant mystic creature on the stage. This time the band had vikings with shields enacting fight scenes, and someone who looked like Loki during finale, with two giant Viking figures on the each side of the stage.

Amon Amarth setlist for the night was full of their greatest hits – Guardians of Asgaard, Shield Wall, The Pursuit of Vikings, Deceiver of the Gods, Put Your Back Into the Oar, We Rule the Waves, The Way of Vikings, Raise Your Horns and Twilight of the Thunder God.

For all Pantera fans their performances are an emotional journey. As the stage curtain displayed the bands name, on the side monitors we saw historical video footage of the better days, with Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell smiling, playing music and interacting with fans. It has been a long time since we lost Dimebag Darrell and fairly recently Vinnie Paul. Pantera was on hiatus or disbanded for more than two decades. In 2022 vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown (who joined Pantera in 1982) with help of legendary guitar virtuoso Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante on drums, went on to tour for the legacy of Abbott brothers. With the current passing of legendary Ozzy Osbourne and Zakk Wylde’s longtime connection to the Prince Of Darkness, the band is dedicating their shows to him as well. Pantera also played on Black Sabbath’s last show before Ozzy’s passing and called Ozzy a mentor and a friend.

For me the introduction to the band happened all the way back in 1990 when Cowboys From Hell was released. While officially it was not the bands first album, it did abandon glam metal sound and went heavy, and was the first on major label, so band considered it as their first release. I truly enjoyed title track and power ballad Cemetery Gates. With 1992 Vulgar Display Of Power and 1994 Far Beyond Driven affinity to the bands music deepened.

As I mentioned earlier, Phil Anselmo declared from the stage that this touring is done to carry on the legacy of late Abbott brothers and Ozzy. Zakk Wylde was sporting a west bearing St Dime and St Vinnie patches, just as the drum set featured portraits of both brothers.

Pantera provided us with full spectrum of their storied career through tonight’s set – Suicide Note Pt. II, Hellbound, 5 Minutes Alone, Strength Beyond Strength, Mouth for War, Goddamn Electric, Becoming, I’m Broken, 10’s, I’ll Cast a Shadow, This Love, Cowboys From Hell, A New Level, Walk, Domination / Hollow and Fucking Hostile.
