Interview by Arturs Feists / artursfeists.photography

How did you choose your band name? What is the story behind your band name?

– Rob (Mule) chose the name. Both of us are massive Monty Python fans, and the Dirty Vicar Sketch is a classic.

What genre of music would you say your band falls under?

Probably somewhere slightly west of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.

Who are some of your musical influences?

Dirty Vicar has tremendous respect and love for the above mentioned NWOBHM, particularly bands like Holocaust, certainly Venom & Motörhead. Though, Mule’s tastes skew more adventurous and prog than my own, and this comes through in his songwriting– I’ve definitely noted shades of Voivod in some of his riffs.

Do you have any upcoming shows or tours?

Currently on deck, Saturday November 18 we play at Red Gate on Main Street, opening for Jisei, Emma Goldman, Ape War, & AK-747s.

Are you working on any new music or planning anything exciting that we can look forward to?

my erstwhile music partner and DV’s main weapon, Mule, has a backlog of about twenty or thirty songs he’s written that need to be fleshed out with lyrics, and recorded. There’s loads more to come. Expect more shows!

What attitude do you need to be in a band?

Unrelenting hope and equal parts hardheadedness and the will to make it happen.

Where do you draw inspiration for your music?

I can only speak for myself as the lyricist & vocalist, but it’s hard to explain the muse; she just appears when she appears, and you really can’t force it. I draw from my own life experience for the lyrics.

What do you hope people take away from your music?

Unbridled joy, catharsis, exhilaration, an escape. Wait… those are what *I* take away from it. I don’t know, man– truthfully, I’m just honored that people would take the time to listen to us, or come see us live. This music (metal in general, that is), in my eyes, is not only life-affirming, it gives the listener power and strength and a feeling of not being alone so much. I know I get that from listening to my favorite records, so I’d be honored if someone got the same thing out of what we do.
